There are a number of ways to increase the amount of points and miles that you earn without flying. In the podcast, we mentioned online shopping, dining, and riding with Lyft.
Here are the links:
To see if your online purchases qualify to earn points or miles, we recommend visiting a site like www.evreward.com or www.cashbackmonitor.com. In the search bar, type in the store that you are purchasing from and see if you can earn any miles.
In this example from www.evreward.com, I searched for deals at www.shoes.com, and I see that I can earn miles with a number of different airlines, including seven miles per dollar spent through American Airlines or five miles per dollar spent through Delta, Southwest, or Alaska Airlines.
To earn miles, you’ll need to click through to your preferred airline and register for their shopping rewards program. Each program is slightly different, but registration is simple and miles can add up quickly. In addition to airline miles, there are also options to earn cash back for online shopping, so make the choice that makes the most sense for you.
You can earn bonus miles, above and beyond the points you already earn, simply by going out to eat. To do so, you will need to sign up for your preferred airline’s dining rewards program.
There are a number of major airlines available, and most offer some sort of first-time user bonus, so it’s possible to switch from program to program to earn thousands of bonus miles. You can’t simultaneously earn miles in multiple frequent flyer programs, but you can switch to a different airline at any time. To start earning miles through the dining rewards program, register for a program, save a payment card on file, and visit participating restaurants.
Earning on Lyft rides
If you haven’t already, download the Lyft app (full disclosure: this is my referral link and we will both get Lyft credit if you use this link to sign up for Lyft for the first time).
When you use Lyft, you’ll earn points on the credit card saved in your account, but you can earn additional airline miles above and beyond those earnings.
To earn Delta SkyMiles on all Lyft rides, link your accounts here: https://www.deltalyft.com/
To earn JetBlue TrueBlue miles on all airport rides, link your accounts here: https://trueblue.jetblue.com/lyft
You don’t need to be flying Delta or JetBlue to earn miles. You simply need to link your accounts once, then use Lyft normally. The miles will be added to your account, typically within a few days of the ride.
Earn and Fly
There are so many ways to earn points and miles without flying, and without spending any more money than you would already spend. Incorporate a few of these practices into your day-to-day habits, and you’ll have enough miles for a flight before you know it.
